What feeds a soul more than entertainment? Fine arts, performing arts, literature, film…all excite the human psyche, giving us creativity, abstract ideas to ponder, courage to try new things, and intriguing topics of conversation. If you are looking for your passions in college, start with something that pleases and entertains you.
I have always found the world of theatre and acting fascinating because it allows you to imagine, question, and create new worlds and times within your minds. It’s a busy life for a college student underneath the pressures of studying, working, filling degree requirements, and settling into a new surrounding, all while trying to meet new people. But, theatre can give you a break from reality, whisking you off to your favorite time period (or even a daydream of your version of Fabio) and it can do so while connecting you with new friends who think and dream like you!
For me, acting and theatre have always been very intriguing, but in high school I was too afraid to step out of my comfort zone and really give it a shot, but as I entered college I saw a huge presence of theatre life on campus and I was driven to be a part of it. I picked up a musical theatre minor and began to explore my enjoyment and skill levels in acting.
I find acting to be an interesting thing to partake in as a college student, even if it is only experienced in a beginner’s acting class, because it allows you to explore different aspects of yourself: your fears, your pleasures, your capability to surrender, and really that’s why we are all at college, to get a clearer picture of who we are and want to become.
The great part about acting is it is not confined to stage acting in old Shakespearean plays. While such historical material is great, it may not be the best seg-way into social atmospheres. But have no fear, explore your college campus and you’ll find theatre troupes, stand up comedians, improv groups, and filmmakers! Entertainment through theatre is such a vast field to immerse yourself in because it involves and recreates every type of person, time, and scenario.
The beauty in creativity is that we can never stop creating. Just as an actor does daily, recreate who you are until you discover the passions that inspire and encourage your future! College is just an open door for exploration, for trial and error. Take an acting class, go to movie premieres and student films, and see comedy shows and plays or musicals with friends! Allow the entertainment of college to thrill you both personally and socially!
