15 Ways to Avoid Gaining the Freshmen 15

Picture 129

1. Choose healthy: there are many unhealthy food options in the dorms, but you must pick and choose wisely or it will sneak up on you!
2. Get active: participate in club sports or hit the gym 3-5 times a week.
3. Avoid eating late at night: calories stick to you past 9pm because you are not burning them off by being active.
4. Meal plan: have three solid, healthy meals each day with a yogurt or crackers as a small snack in between.
5. Drink water: at least 2 liters a day to stay fit and hydrated.
6. Eat vegetables: they are essential to your growth and health diet and provide a lot of nutrition!
7. Small portions: watch the amount of food you eat. Most people overeat, so it is essential to only each a single portion size.
8. Protein power: you must eat protein! Whether it is meat or a substitute, make sure you have some at least once a day to stay lean.
9. Avoid liquid calories: juices and sodas add up and are unnecessary calories, stay away from drinking too much of them!
10. Fiber time: eat a good, solid breakfast that is packed with fiber. Steel-cut oatmeal is a great example with fresh fruit.
11. Drinking: one shot, one glass of wine, and one beer all equate to around 100 calories each. Not worth it! Be careful with alcohol consumption if you choose to drink.
12. Pizza Problems: pizza is the easiest meal a college student can consume. It also has zero nutritional value. Try to stay away.
13. All you can eat: buffets exist at nearly every campus, but that does not mean you have to eat everything in sight.
14. Dessert Drama: eating dessert can be easily avoided. Choose one night a week where you splurge on something delicious.
15. Carbo-Overload: carbs are essential in your diet, but you must pick the right ones. Avoid white rice and white bread and instead choose whole grain, beans and brown rice.
These tips should be your bible to live by in order to survive the dorm-food lifestyle. By following these, you will look and feel great about yourself and be able to stay focused on schoolwork throughout the day!

Is Joining a Sorority the Right Thing to Do?

Picture 93

Hey hey hey,

This is the question most of you ladies will be asking when you are going off to college, and I do remember considering this question too.

I knew for a fact that when I came to college with any of my girlfriends it would be rather difficult to make new friends that remind you of your friends from home. The questions I ask you all are will you be here with friends or will you have to try harder in making new friends? If you do come with friends, joining a sorority will help you branch out and meet new people you would never expect would have such an impact on your life.

If you come with zero friends here, then the process of joining a sorority will help you become more outgoing. When I decided to join, I didn’t know exactly what to expect because I was never really around so many girls at one time, or what the process was to joining a sorority.

After I joined the sorority, I knew that it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It has changed my college experience I a way that if I hadn’t of joined I wouldn’t have done half the things I have done in college and the great people I have met. Everyone in my sorority impacts me in a different way.

My goal for this blog is to help you answer the question by showing you what sorority life is all about. If you still haven’t made up your mind, I hope that this blog will make you join.

If you like to party, have friends, make the community a better place, do some community service, balance grades and social life, then joining a sorority is the right thing to do.

Sorority Rush 101: Calling all First Time Rushees

Picture 19

Ladies,

Let’s get a big hoorah for the fact that summer is quickly approaching!! Many of you are ending a familiar chapter in your life and being introduced to the crazy new concepts of little supervision, independence, and blatant reality. How do I make new friends, how do I find my way around this ridiculously large campus, are the classes really 300 people?! The summer before your first year of college is SO exciting and terrifying….especially for you ladies thinking about rushing in the fall and have no utter idea what you are getting yourself into.
Shall we break it down now…. ?:

1. During the freshman orientation weekends, representatives from Greek life will be present in the campus clubs/activities portion of the day. This is a great opportunity to speak face to face with some of the young women who are veterans in the sorority world. They will show you how to register for rush right then and there or you can register on your own, given a little time to mull it over. Honestly, if you are hesitant about rushing but still have that little hint of curiosity…you should just sign up and see how it goes! It is very common for girls to go though the first few days of rush and decide it may not be for them. That’s 100% okay… hey you met some new friends and are starting off your college experience regret free.

2. After registering, you will start receiving updated emails informing potential new Greek life members about upcoming dates and events for rush week, which for me happened to be the first week of fall term.

3. As for recommendations, utilize all the resources you have! If you are a “legacy” (had a alumni or current relative in a particular house) most likely your presence has already been acknowledged…rush is creepy like that…but letters of recommendations are helpful reminders for houses as to who you are so that they can keep a special eye out for you. Don’t worry everything is confidential within each sorority too; giving you equal advantage at every house visit.

4. APPAREL: yes I know this seems to be a minor detail, but who are we kidding girls want to know what is appropriate to wear as they blindly enter rush week. Going out and buying a new wardrobe is totally unnecessary…though would be pretty sweet! Each day you will get a schedule and depending what is on the agenda for the day you should dress accordingly…for example day 1 meet and greets are reserved for casual attire/ the much anticipated rush t-shirts. The final day calls for a classy dress (graduation-esk) and heels. Look neat and put together, but with your own flare…girls are going to be flirting with you hard core (yes this is true) and care way more about the originality of your personality and ability to hold a conversation…not the price of your jeans.

5. As the week of rush commences, each girl is divided randomly into what we call “walking groups.” The initial awkwardness of introductions and major swapping are quickly replaced by mutual nerves and excited chatter. Over the next week open yourself up and embrace the girls in your group because they are going through the same crazy emotions and thoughts as you are….and you never know the girl standing next to you in line could become your new best friend (I was fortunate enough to have that happen to me☺).

6. The final piece of advice I have for all you first time rushees is remain positive and bold…with a splash of modesty. Rush is all about portraying the best YOU that you know you can be. Time is precious and limited so make sure you depart each house leaving a genuine lasting impression, whatever that may be. For those modest chicas out there who would rather brush off the fact that they were a varsity sport athlete or organized a service trip to South America…IT’S OKAY TO BRAG A LITTLE, HAVE CONFIDENCE! The recruiters truly want to know the unique aspects of each young lady’s life in order to decide if they are a good fit for that particular sorority. Truly stick to who you are though…it will most importantly make your choice of house so much easier if you stick to your core values, aspirations, and ideal college experience. Oh and don’t forget…. recruiters are trying to make an influential impression on the rushees as well (and are nervous too!) but ultimately, it is YOUR personal choice…DO YOU LADIES♥ good luck.

A Pinning… AKA PRE ENGAGEMENT

Picture 148

By Amanda Guillen

What exactly is a pinning?

Well to first off it is between a sorority woman and a fraternity man who have been dating each other for a while and want to share and celebrate their love and relationship with their friends, sisters, and brothers.

It is like an engagement before an engagement.

Or it can be like a Greek version of a promise ring that can signify that they are in a seriously committed relationship. Every one in both houses show up for a ceremony at of the Greek house they are a part of. It starts off with their closest friends talking and giving us examples of their relationship.

There are no rules so anyone and everyone who is up there talking can say and show anything they want. It can be anything from their sex stories to how often they fight or how much they love each other. All of this information is shared amongst their brothers and sisters.

At the end of everyone’s short speech the couple gives there speech to one another and it often leads to tears and laughter. After they are done with the speech, the boyfriends removes his pin and puts it on the girl, this means that he is putting his girlfriend above his brothers and she is now a part of them.

After the ceremony that can take up to two hours listening to ridiculous stories there is a big celebration in honor of the couple. The party takes place at one of the live-outs and refreshments are always provided to get the party going.
So when you are in college and you are in a relationship with a fraternity man, think about whether or not you will think about being with him for a long time so you can get your fairytale pinning.

Greek Life: One big family

Picture 12

Last Friday, our campus was struck with the devastating news that a female student had passed away. She was in a sorority that happened to be right down the street from our frat castle. Although I didn’t personally know her, a bunch of the other guys in my house knew her quite well.

It was truly remarkable how well the Greek community rallied around this one house. Cards were signed, flowers were bought, and signs showing support were hung from windows and roofs.

Friends and foes came together as one to celebrate and remember the life of a girl who was truly beautiful inside and out. A candlelight vigil held on Sunday night had a tremendous showing, with people from every fraternity and sorority in attendance. There had to have been over 1000 people there, giving their respects and supporting the family, friends, and sisters of the girl who passed.

It made me real proud to be a part of this Greek community.

It was an awesome testament to how Greek life is like one big family.

Sure, there’s the fraternity rivalries and some girls in one house might despise those in another. But in times of need, everyone bands together for the betterment of each other. It’s an awesome feeling knowing that you have a mafia of brothers and sisters who care about you, even if they can’t put a name to your face. I leave you with a quote that is a favorite of mine, an accurate depiction of how we will remember our friend. Rest In Peace.

“Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.” – Anonymous

Daily Trend: Braids

577651_10151684942210557_537825556_24390722_1642938733_n

Are you sick of doing the same old thing to your hair? The waterfall braid highlights and plays up you boring everyday look! While it looks complicated, it is actually super easy to learn and can be worn for a variety of different occasions. You can wrap it all the way around your head or just half way, making it as thick or thin as you please. Attached is a how-to video, so you can teach yourself or have someone do it for you.

Another fun and easy braid is the fishtail braid. This looks best as a single, long braid that I would recommend wearing to the side for a retro look. The great thing about this braid is you can use all of your hair for it, getting it out of your way while styling it so it looks great. I also attached a how-to video for this, but once you know how to do it, it is simple to remember and repeat.

I hope you enjoyed these hair trend tips! Keep me posted with new ideas I should be aware of and post about!
