You’ve still got all summer to wait before you pack your bags and head off to school, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything you can do to get ready now! Sure, you know you have to sign up for orientation and apply for housing, but here’s some things you can do over the summer to get yourself more prepared, confortable, and confident when August rolls around.
Get connected with your college’s “Class of ____” Facebook page:
When I joined the Facebook page for my college class, I met a ton of people VERY QUICKLY. It helped me feel like I wasn’t the only one I knew that was starting over and attending this school, and I already felt like I had a group of people that I could go to and hangout with. We began to share interests, find people that would be taking the same classes as us, and we would even have late night group conversations on Facebook chat! Facebook may occupy your time plenty enough already, but once you join your class’s Facebook page, it’ll be that much more time consuming!
Surf your school’s official website:
Your school’s website probably looks familiar to you already, as it is probably where you sent your application, applied for housing, etc. There are parts of your school’s website that you may not have had the time to see yet though, like the campus activities site or the student life sections. Who knows, you may find out something about your school that you didn’t know before, and also something that will be of great use to you in the fall.
Search now for dorm stuff and school supplies:
Websites such as dormco.com and bedbathandbeyond.com are all set up and ready for students to flood their online shopping sites for dorm stuff. If you begin looking early on in the semester, you can get an idea of what all you want to buy and how much you think it will approximately cost (your parents will appreciate the heads up when you actually begin spending the money!).
With that being said however, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING YET. Not unless you know for sure you’re going to need it, such as a new bed set or a laptop. Other things, like a TV or a mini fridge may not be necessary if your roommate is already planning on brining them, or if the room you are assigned is too small to even compensate for these kinds of items. Wait until after your room assignment and orientation before you make any large purchases, it’ll save you a lot of money in the long haul.
Become familiar with events going on the first week of school:
The first week of school is filled with fun, meeting new people, and free stuff! You’ll want to know the second you step on campus where exactly you’ll want to go, and what you will want to make time for. You don’t have to have your entire schedule planned to a T, but you’ll want a general idea of what you’re doing so that you’re not sitting in your dorm room bored those first few days until classes start (trust me though, you won’t!).
