Okay, so we’ve gone over the fact that alcohol can be the true cause of the Freshmen 15, but the bigger issue at hand is: how can we avoid it?
Let’s face it: even if you’re not a girl, you still want to look good! No one wants to date the bro with a beer belly or the chick with Keystone-induced cellulite. Here are some great tips on avoiding packing on the pounds as you pound out the Natty Lights.
Opt For Hard Alcohol – The most twisted advice you’ve ever heard in your life, right? Not totally. Face it: drinking hard alcohol saves you quite a bit of calories, especially throughout the length of a long night of partying. The downside? Hard alcohol has a significantly higher alcohol content, so it’s a lot easier for things to get out of hand if you’re not careful.
Walk When Possible – After going to school in the snowy hills of Ithaca, I’ve dealt with every kind of inclement weather…and gone out regardless. Take advantage of the nights where it’s really nice and your destination is in reasonable walking distance. If you guys haven’t pregamed too hard, it’ll be totally worth it to walk to the night’s party. Not only will you be burning some calories without thinking about it, but walking places always leads to some….interesting…moments with your friends that you will be sure to recap the next morning in the dining hall.
Do Dinner Right – Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays always are the few days out of the week where people are actually excited for the dining hall. Girls want to eat a good meal so they don’t end up being that girl who can’t hold her alcohol at a party. Guys like to eat a good meal because they’re guys….and they like to drink a lot. However, just binging on pizza and fries for dinner isn’t your best bet. Try filling foods and healthy carbs; go for grilled chicken, a big salad, and/or pasta. We all know that we’ll be eating again when the night ends, so there’s no need to indulge in greasy foods twice in one night.
Which leads me to…
Slow Down On The Takeout – All too often it’s easy to get back to the dorm from a party, chill with your friends, and decide to hit up CampusFood.com for some good eats. Let’s be real: sometimes we don’t even make it back to campus before we decide we need to stop at Taco Bell for a late night snack. Try not to go too crazy on these 3am food binges – you’ll feel even worse in the morning after a night of too many drinks and too many burgers.
Work Out! – If you’re athletic like myself, you actually like working out. However that’s not the case for everyone. Going for a nice mid-afternoon run outside, hitting the fitness center for a Boot Camp class, or even using the rowing machine to tone up, will prove very usually in combating the Freshmen 15. Make it a routine with your girls (or guys) to go and work out multiple times a week, especially on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Your body needs to recoup from all the hard partying and work off all of those calories you packed on from double fisting Svedka all night. Even if you’re feeling tired, lazy, or downright awful from a rough night of partying, working out the next day (and consistently) will have you feeling great and looking your best.
